Nearly three years since his last picture director Danny Boyle intends to induce a Trance with his new psychological heist thriller. This one’s got some early buzz lauding solid performances from leads Rosario Dawson and James McAvoy, a compelling multi-layered narrative, and mind-bendingly stylized visuals. Robert Redford’s got a thriller of his own in the mix this week with The Company You Keep, along with a a 3D rerelease of Jurassic Park, and a horror picture promising evil and death in Evil Dead. In the immortal words of my Twitter account post-screening: “Evil Dead HOLY SHIT…I mean HOLY MOTHER FUCKING SHIT that was a fantastic movie.” Apologies to those who are offended by such language, but you are probably not the target audience this sadistically gory horror flick is going for anyway. Instead this blood soaked film is catering to those who like their gore gross and their films shocking. Evil Dead takes many of its cues from the original film but Fede Alvarez creates something entirely his own. SXSW is right around the corner so I’ve decided to give you all a Tuesday Top 10 treat from Terence (oh the alliteration!). Well you certainly can’t accuse them of just blindly remaking the original. The red band teaser trailer for Evil Dead has arrived online and it’s some sick stuff. Shedding the camp of the original film (and #22 horror film of all time) The Evil Dead, this film seems to focus on uber-violence and a Saw-like green aesthetic to derive it’s scares. Following the same story as the original, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
