Summit Entertainment has released a new still for their highly anticipated new film, Divergent. The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley stars in this futuristic, dystopian tale in which she leaves her people to join a rival group. The film is based on the popular young adult novel by Veronica Roth. After the jump, have a look at an image from a point in the story when Tris (Woodley) begins her initiation into the Dauntless faction. Divergent also stars Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, and Maggie Q, and has a March 21, 2014 release date.

A Good Day to Die Hard (**)

It's time for Bruce Willis to have John McClane retire...

    February 20, 2013

good_day_to_die_hard_ver5I know that the title of the movie that I’m reviewing is A Good Day to Die Hard, but it actually took some convincing for me to actually believe that this was a part of the Die Hard franchise. Sure, Bruce Willis is in it, and he has the right name, but still…this is a stretch for me to accept. The John McClane we all know and love has become some senior citizen superhero, and while moments of this flick are entertaining, it just isn’t Die Hard. Director John Moore and writer Skip Woods (who previously had an uncredited hand in the penning of Live Free or Die Hard) are overly concerned with making this a loud and violent action movie that they completely disregard the whole point of having Willis become McClane again. I honestly believe that if you took the Die Hard names and connective tissue away and just left us with a generic shoot em up, it would have been a better sell. Everything about this is mediocre, but because of affection for the main character, it just winds up hurting all the more. The sequels have all been ridiculous in one way or another, but this one just up and takes the cake for stupidity.

    Jack Reacher (***)

Tom Cruise has a potential new franchise here, and it's a good one...

    December 21, 2012

jack_reacher_ver2Much like the title character, the film ‘Jack Reacher’ gets in, does its job, and gets out. Tom Cruise’s potential new franchise is a decidedly low tech detective story that offers audiences some old school entertainment. It’s hardly original, but I’m pretty sure that’s intentional on the part of Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie. They know the kind of movie this is, and in adapting Lee Child’s popular series of books about the title character, they seem to have effectively achieved their goals. Cruise is sufficiently charismatic and carries the movie from an acting standpoint, while McQuarrie plays around with the tone a little more than you’d expect. Paramount seems to be confident in this as a new franchise for Cruise (despite having a review embargo in place until opening day, normally the sign of a film with something to hide), and I think they’ve got a winning formula in place. I can see this flick playing on TV for the next decade, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s never revolutionary and does have its problems, but for pure entertainment this is a solid holiday outing at the movies. If you like action movies starring Cruise, this is another one to check out…
