August: Osage County is one of the most anticipated films of the Oscar season given it’s ensemble cast led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and award winning pedigree (it won the Tony and the Pulitzer Prize). Today on GMA, the Weinstein Company debuted the trailer giving everyone the first look at the material since the test screening held in March. The trailer, while establishing all of the main players, is a more subtle affair, choosing to not play up the acidic wit of Lett’s writing or the really big confrontations, although you do get a glimpse of the dinner scene. Check it out after the jump!

Debut writer/director Lance Edmands puts an admirable touch on his film Bluebird starring John Slattery and Amy Morton. The story and overall aura of the film feels more in line with films like Winter’s Bone (2010) and The Sweet Hereafter (1997) but lacking the emotional punch needed to grab the audience fully. Ultimately the film explores many of its central characters in an interesting manner but leaves many questions unanswered and not in the indie-flair way that can still feel satisfying. It’s the powerful performance of Amy Morton and the efforts of the rest of the cast that gives the film any lasting impression.
The film takes place in the frozen woods of a small Maine town. After Lesley (Morton) makes a tragic mistake that shatters the balance of the community, not even her husband Richard (Slattery) or her daughter Paula (Emily Meade), can rid her of the overbearing guilt that has taken over. As multiple stories take place including that of Marla (Louisa Krause), Crystal (Margo Martindale), and young Owen (Quinn Bard), all of their lives become connected in a way none of them could have imagined, perhaps forever. Supernatural dramas have been all the rage the past few years but while we’ve been regaled with tales of vampires and werewolves, we haven’t seen to many movies focusing on witches. That will change come February, when Beautiful Creatures hits the screen. Beautiful Creatures is a Southern gothic tale about a local teenager and the mysterious new girl in town who uncover dark secrets about their respective families. While the initial teen romance might put some people off, this movie is based off a well regarded series of books and features a great cast of supporting players (Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis and Emmy Rossum).
