It’s time to visit the week that was via our Around the Circuit piece, where we look back at articles that we feel are worth your time covering the Oscar race, new releases, or really just anything film related.

    Link(s) of the week:

The team at Deadline gave us a studio-by-studio look at the films in contention for Oscar this year. Pete Hammond then talked about the impact early film festivals have on awards season, and in the wake of this year’s Presidential election wondered if a new type of Presidential campaign might begin for Oscar.

    Link(s) of the week:

The big news this week (or year) was Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4 billion, and the subsequent announcement that there would be three new Star Wars films starting in 2015. Following this announcement, the first instinct was to speculate on who should direct (Christopher Nolan, please). Nathan Adams of Film School Rejects, Ethan Anderson of First Showing, Oliver Lyttelton at The Playlist, and Matt Goldberg at Collider, were just a few who weighed in on the director discussion. While Susan Wloszczyna of USA Today talked about the odds of returning characters, and – enter shameless plug – yours truly was asked who I’d like to see reappear.

    Link of the week:

Brad Brevet at Rope of Silicon brings us a Fall movie preview, one so extensive that he had to divide it into four parts. Part one looks at films slated for a September release, part two goes over the films coming out in October, part three covers November, and part four, December.

    Link of the week:

In Contention’s Guy Lodge bemoans the lack of Original Screenplays in the mix each year, regardless of the last three Best Picture winners all being considered original by AMPAS’ standards. The lack of depth in the Original Screenplay field is astonishing, and Guy points the finger at studios which prefer taking on low risks – such as sequels, re-adaptations, and spin-offs - to suit an audience that pays out to see familiarity over contemporary. However, Guy also sees the silver lining on the issue by pointing out that films like A Separation and Bridesmaids wouldn’t have the opportunity to be nominated at all if the category was more saturated by Oscar-friendly scripts. He goes on to give an early look at what films might be in the hunt for a nominee in this field.

It’s time again to take a look at what happened around the web this week. The main topic of discussion was The Dark Knight Rises, to no one’s surprise.

    Link of the week:

At Awards Daily, Sasha Stone reflects on the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, rightfully defending The Dark Knight Rises (and films in general) against those who might feel the violence on-screen encouraged the heinous acts of a madman. Instead she points the finger at the gunman’s ease of access to a semi-automatic weapon and examines the relevance of the recent events to those portrayed in Lynn Ramsey’s We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011).

I am happy to introduce a new weekly post to you dear Awards Circuit readers: Around the Circuit will take a look back at the week around the internet, focusing primarily on bringing you perspectives on the awards race from sister sites, while also sharing just about anything movie related that might be worth your special attention.

    So let’s begin, shall we?

    The link of the week:

Following the news of the November release date for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, the great Guy Lodge of Hitfix’s In Contention warned us of jumping the gun on any foregone conclusions that Daniel Day-Lewis would win his third Oscar. At least not until we’ve actually seen the performances in competition (or at least a trailer for his film!). I wholeheartedly agree, and in fact have John Hawkes (The Sessions) as my early prediction to win over my favorite actor (unless Phoenix ends up Lead for The Master, then I’ll switch to him). I mean, look how long it took the legendary Meryl Streep to win her third Oscar, right? Not to mention that no one has ever won three Lead Actor Oscars. If anyone was to do it, though, my money would be on Day-Lewis, who I regard as the finest actor of the last 20+ years. Read his post here.
