    MacFarlane

For all of those hoping for a sequel to the hit number, “We Saw Your Boobs,” this might be a bit of a disappointment. While producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are set to return, Seth MacFarlane – who hosted the 85th Academy Awards earlier this year – has officially taken his name out of the running for next year’s presentation. See what the man behind The Family Guy tweeted after the jump.

122718225__388156b__130420234921-275x183It’s super early to really be thinking about the next Oscar telecast, I know. Still, with some recent rumors suggesting that since last year’s show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are coming back, host Seth MacFarlane could be returning too, I figured this was worth bringing up briefly. I’m incredibly skeptical that MacFarlane has any interest in coming back for a return engagement, but I don’t doubt that his name came up at least once in conversation. Still, I’m guessing they’ll be going in a somewhat more conservative direction this time after some too umbrage with the jokes last year, though I tend to like when they at least look into edgier people. After the jump, I’ll once again suggest some names that I’m sure the Academy will ignore, and feel free to let me know who your ideal host is, or if you’d prefer MacFarlane to come back.

Well this is interesting, isn’t it? Usually when the Best Picture prize is handed out and the producers finish their thank you speeches, the credits roll and the year officially comes to an end. However, Kristin Chenoweth and Seth MacFarlane apparently want to have the last word, and will be performing a closing number that the producers seem pretty excited about. To quote Calvin Candie, “you had my curiosity… but now you have my attention.” Have a look at the official release after the jump.

    Movie 43 (½)

One of the worst movies of all time, plain and simple...

    February 2, 2013

movie_forty_threeI’ve never before considered giving a film zero stars. Normally I believe in never going there for any reason (since movies generally are still made with good intentions and are only meant to please) and receiving the half star rating for only the most blatantly atrocious works that are insults to humanity. I’ve never yet been compelled to go that low with a review while at The Awards Circuit. No evidence in recent cinematic history has ever driven me to that point. Well, ladies and gentlemen…I’ve found Exhibit A. Movie 43 is frankly among the worst things I’ve ever seen, and I briefly considered going down to zero. Dear readers, I’ve never given a lower rating to a review than I am here. A “comedy” made up of one unfunny skit after the other that’s all the worse because of its inexplicable star-studded cast, it really defeats the purpose of a review. All I can do here is list the culprits of this crime against cinema and make sure their names are here for blame to be assigned. I usually try to avoid mean reviews, as you all know…but I’m making an exception here. If there’s any worse films still to come in 2013, I’ll have to seriously re-evaluate my profession. At a certain point, it’s just not worth it. Yes, ‘Movie 43′ has even made me question my love of film and passion for criticism. I had this to say immediately after seeing it:

‘Movie 43′ has convinced me that either there is no god (since nothing this bad should ever be allowed) or that there must be one and that this is some sort of punishment. I just can’t decide which.

I stand by those words, so that should really tell you something.

AMPAS has announced that Mark Wahlberg and his stuffed teddy bear co-star, Ted, will be presenters at the 85th Academyted Awards. This comes as little surprise, as Seth MacFarlane – the director, writer, and voice of Ted – is this year’s Oscar host. If I’m not mistaken though, Wahlberg and Ted are the first presenters announced for the ceremony. I’m sure a LOT more names will be dropping in the next few days, so stay tuned to The Awards Circuit for the latest announcements. Have a look at the official release after the jump.

When it comes to the difficulties of buying a gift during the holidays, sometimes it’s just best to go with what you know. Nearly everyone at one point has encountered The Simpsons, so why not satisfy your love of America’s favorite dysfunctional family by checking out the newly released 15th Season on either Blu-Ray or DVD? With popular episodes like “My Mother the Carjacker,” “Diatribe of a Mad Housewife,” and “Simple Simpson,” it’s hard to argue against the overall quality of the season. “The Regina Monologues” episode even topped A.V. Club’s 2009 list of “10 Best Simpsons Episodes from the Past Five Seasons.” The season’s partial focus on The War in Iraq — which had of course commenced that year (2003) — was a hot topic of discussion amongst fans, critics and even some higher-ups in government. Tony Blair’s vocal participation in “The Regina Monologues” caused somewhat of a controversy since his country, and America, expected him to fully invest every hour of his daily life towards the war effort in Iraq. This season is also infamous for showcasing the first real “acting” chops of Simon Cowell, whose television stardom thanks to American Idol was then at an all-time high. As always, revisiting The Simpsons in these Blu-Ray/DVD box sets means re-experiencing the year of its release. Beyond staying true to its timeless formula and poignant humor, The Simpsons Season 15 is as historically significant as a 2003 time capsule.

Seth MacFarlane to Follow Up ‘Ted’ with Western Comedy

The 'Family Guy' creator to direct and star in a live-action Western

    December 4, 2012

After his surprisingly successful live-action directorial debut, Ted, Seth MacFarlane is gearing up for his next project, which he plans to direct and star in.   He’s joined by his Ted co-writers, Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, in penning A Million Ways to Die in the West, an offbeat comedy in the vein of Blazing Saddles (1974).

With Seth MacFarlane recently awarded the prestigious gig of hosting the Oscars in February 2013, he becomes one of, if not, the first person to host the Oscars that got his start primarily in voice-over work.  MacFarlane voices Brian, Stewie, Quagmire, and Peter Griffin on FOX’s hit-show “Family Guy,” where he’s won an Emmy Award in the show’s near thirteen year run.

The Oscars, unbeknownst to many,  have a strict rule about nominating voice-work in films.  Today’s question asks which voice-over performance by an actor or actress would you reward with either an Academy Award Nomination or Win?

    Episode 38:01 (***½)

The 38th season of “Saturday Night LIVE” debuted last Saturday with host Seth MacFarlane, who’s had a great year with his film “Ted” and of course, still holds the success of FOX’s “Family Guy.”

In show structure, this was the first episode since Emmy Award nominee Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Abby Elliott were announced to leave the show at the end of last season.  Leaving fans of the show skeptical, critics and audiences were unsure if the show would be able to sustain without the multi-layered talents of Wiig and Samberg who have been staples in the show for years.  Proud to report, when talent leaves, new talent steps up. Weekend Openings (June 29-July 1)

Male strippers and a foul-mouthed teddy bear challenge Pixar at the box office this weekend. Will they prevail?

    Author: Robert Hamer
    June 30, 2012

Looks like this weekend will go down in the books as one of pleasant surprises, both financially and quality-wise.  Whether that will translate into Oscar nominations may happen for at least one of them…

Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum take us into the world of male strippers in Magic Mike, about a seasoned dancer who takes a rookie under his wing and shows him the ropes.  Based on the star’s own beginnings as a club dancer, critics have been very positive on the film, including our own Joey Magidson, who praised its writing, performances and direction from Soderbergh.  Rather than being a bubbly dance flick aimed squarely at female audiences, Joey instead relayed back an offbeat and surprisingly in-depth character study of men in an odd profession.  Nevertheless, the presence of handsome men taking their clothes off will certainly draw in one kind of audience and turn off another, no matter how different the actual film is.  Online and Friday ticket sales were strong and should give the film a good $30-35 million haul.  The critical acclaim, however, raises even more intriguing possibilities for its awards prospects.  Too racy for the Academy, you say?  Tell that to The Full Monty.  I would not be surprised to see this among the Best Original Screenplay nominees next January.  The performances are less of a certainty, and will probably require a focused campaign to give the well-received work of Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum or Alex Pettyfer a shot at an Academy Award nomination.  My opinion is that good-looking men already have a hell of a time getting noticed by the Academy when they don’t draw attention to how attractive they are, so I am not betting on any of them any time soon, but that could change… Read more on Weekend Openings (June 29-July 1)…

    Ted (***)

Seth MacFarlane makes a successful jump to the big screen...

    June 30, 2012

One of the most different “bromance” movies in recent memory, ‘Ted’ is the story of the love between a boy and his teddy bear. Of course, the bear is one that’s magically brought to life and they grow up into vulgar stoners. Seth MacFarlane’s first foray into films is more or less ‘Family Guy: The Movie’ in terms of its basic humor and beats in its plot, but this is a surprisingly satisfying comedy. Yes, its done, but the friendship at the core of the flick has a lot of heart. Alongside a game comedic performance by Mark Wahlberg, MacFarlane does a solid job playing the title character (with the help of some really good CGI) and shows he has a future making movies. There are some moments that fall flat here, and it’s unabashedly stupid, but by and large the jokes always bring about a laugh. For me, this is the second funniest film of 2012 so far, lagging only behind ’21 Jump Street’ in that regard. I’d wager a guess that most of you already know if you have any interest in ‘Ted’ or not, but if you’re somehow on the fence, let me push you off of it, and on your way to the theater. This is a comedy that’s well worth your time.
