Another week has passed, Awards Circuit devotees, and we have not one but two (!!!) brand new Power Hour episodes for your listening pleasure! In the first show, you’ll discover the winners of ACCA 1999 and in the second we round-table critique the hot mess that is Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. Go ahead, press that “play” button…I know you can’t resist. Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 5/12)…
The rumor mill continues to churn out possibility after possibility in regard to who might wind up directing the ‘Justice League’ movie that we know for sure is coming in a few years. Obviously Ben Affleck was the original top choice, but he’s now firmly shot that down, leaving Warner Brothers to continue their search. Over at Moviehole (found here) they’ve put forward that Lana and Andy Wachowski are now at the top of the list for the duties. I actually think that might be a good match for the material, but time will tell there. After the jump you can see some of the story, but stay tuned to find out if they have any interest. Much like I mused around a month ago about who could direct the sequel to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ if Marc Webb doesn’t wind up returning, I’m back again discussing potential directors for a superhero project…this time, the open slot for the ‘Justice League’ film. This is a much different project, and obviously Warner Brothers is so far looking at the A-list for their filmmaker. Christopher Nolan distanced himself from the project pretty much as soon as asked during his publicity for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and I’d expect any day now to hear an official no from Ben Affleck’s camp after the studio set their sights on him. There are certainly plenty of interesting filmmakers who could do a great job with the gig and after the jump I’ll get into the names who might be in contention, along with who I’d like to see get the job. But this is mostly about seeing who you’d like to see sign on. That’s what I’m most interested in, but we’ll get the conversation started with my take on things below.
File this one as a definite long shot, but it seems that Warner Brothers is trying to sit down with Ben Affleck to convince him to take the reigns for their gestating ‘Justice League’ film. Variety is reporting here that the studio has him at the top of their list now that Christopher Nolan has made it abundantly clear that he’ll have nothing to do with this movie. The flick has a script written by ‘Gangster Squad’ scribe Will Beal and WB has a strong relationship with Affleck so this does make a bit of sense. I’d personally love for it to happen, but I have my doubts. Affleck seems interested in a slightly different sort of film at the moment, though who knows, as the studio sought him out for their Superman reboot as well. After the jump you can see a few details of this story, but take it with a grain of salt for now. One can dream, of course. Read on below for more…
Now that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is out in theaters, it sort of feels like we’ve reached a milestone point in the realm of superhero flicks…perhaps even an apex if you will. Everything that will come next for the genre will be judged on a different playing field due to that film and this year’s ‘The Avengers’ as well (essentially you now have to go big or go home). Those two films were as anticipated as any other major comic book film out there, and some might say the hype has been as much as any other big flick in general. As most people would argue that 2012 has seen the release of two of the best superhero movies of all time, I thought it was only proper to give a little rundown of what I think are the 10 best of all time (at least so far). Obviously there are lots of contenders for a list like this one, some more universally embraced than others, and it’s fair to say that no two people would come up with the same combination of flicks, but this is mine, so just keep that in mind as you read on. Of course I’ll want you all to give your picks later in the comments, but for now let’s get started and focus on my picks and see where things go from there. Which filmmakers who took multiple dips into the superhero pool got a citation from me here? Did I give any love to Tim Burton’s contributions to the genre? What about Jon Favreau’s? Presumably Christopher Nolan’s, right? Perhaps Sam Raimi’s? Bryan Singer’s could be in play, couldn’t they? Maybe even Joel Schumaker’s? (I assure you I did not go that route). First off, here are some that just missed the cut for me when compiling this list of lifesavers…
It may be hard to believe, but we now live in a world where both ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ have come out in theaters. What superhero is there left now to get excited over? Why, Superman of course, and Christopher Nolan/Zack Snyder’s re-imagining of the character. Warner Brothers let loose yesterday with the first two Teaser Trailers for their upcoming reboot ‘Man of Steel’, and I think they’re great (true teasers, and honestly the early comments saying it’s as if Terrence Malick directed it instead of Snyder look on the money to me). You can take a look at them after the jump and see what you think of course. They’re pretty much identical except for one has Jonathan Kent (played by Kevin Costner) narrating and one has Jor-El (played by Russell Crowe) doing so. Take a gander below…
I may not be among a huge group of people, but I’m someone who’s actually excited for Marc Webb’s upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man franchise next month. I liked what I saw earlier in the year, and the rumors I’d been hearing were encouraging as well. Critics in England however, have actually seen the movie, and some have put out their early reviews already. You can get a sense of some of them after the jump, but they’re mostly on the positive side. It looks like Andrew Garfield at the very least is a success story. Read on below for more…
Part of my write-up yesterday (found here in case you missed it) of the event I was at for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ included an early look at this trailer. Now that it’s up, you all can see what I saw. Here it is, after the jump…
