  • ‘Fruitvale Station’ Trailer Shows a Promising Michael B. Jordan for Oscar Consideration!

Coogler's debut film already looks strong for awards consideration...

    May 10, 2013

fruitvale-station02A film that is already on Oscar’s radar before it even opens is Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station starring Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer.  Terence gave positive feedback about the film out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.  While the buzz is high for the film’s chances during awards season, this is one of many films the Weinstein Company has on their plate in 2013.  Other notable acquired films include August: Osage County, which had a trailer released recently, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and the Grace Kelly biopic, Grace of Monaco with Nicole Kidman.  The film won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award back in January.

The first trailer has dropped exclusively from Yahoo! and it features what is sure to be a tension filled film full of emotion.  Displayed prominently in the trailer is the talented and beautiful Melonie Diaz, an actress that garnered my attention in Dito Montiel’s classic film A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006).  Michael B. Jordan, best known for his performance as Steve Montgomery in Chronicle (2012) has taken the lion’s share of citations from critics that have seen it.  If he is as good as many say he is, perhaps the summer release will give him enough time to gain momentum until the Oscar nominations.  Very early to tell but if I had a guess, I think he may result in the same manner of Derek Luke when he wowed critics, quietly I might add, for his performance in Phillip Noyce’s Catch a Fire (2006).  Nevertheless, I’m on board for the film and can’t wait to see it.

The film opens July 16th. Read more on ‘Fruitvale Station’ Trailer Shows a Promising Michael B. Jordan for Oscar Consideration!…

AugustPosterAugust: Osage County is one of the most anticipated films of the Oscar season given it’s ensemble cast led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and award winning pedigree (it won the Tony and the Pulitzer Prize). Today on GMA, the Weinstein Company debuted the trailer giving everyone the first look at the material since the test screening held in March. The trailer, while establishing all of the main players, is a more subtle affair, choosing to not play up the acidic wit of Lett’s writing or the really big confrontations, although you do get a glimpse of the dinner scene. Check it out after the jump!

grandmaster_imageAnticipating certain films, Kar Wai Wong’s film The Grandmaster has been near the top for two years now.  Being distributed by the Weinstein Company, this  upcoming film tells the story of Ip Man, the martial artist that trained Bruce Lee.  Thanks to Sasha Stone for pointing uploading, the film has just released a teaser trailer.  I can only hope its as good as I think it can be in my head.  It looks stylistically brilliant.

The film stars Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang and is co-written by Kar Wai Wong, Haofeng Xu, and Jingzhi Zou. The Grandmaster is scheduled to be released August 23, 2013.

lennycooke_imageIt’s time for all of us film lovers to expand our horizons to films that are outside our normalcy.  We encourage independent filmmakers to push the medium regularly but we have to attempt to seek some of these films out on a regular basis.  With digital streaming in full force nowadays, it allows the opportunity to see some of these films that usually aren’t playing at a theater near you.

The Tribeca Film Festival is celebrating many independent cinema including foreign films and documentaries.  A documentary that looks incredibly interesting is Lenny Cooke.  Telling the story of a high school basketball player that was destined to become the next great sports legend, nearly twelve years later, he hasn’t played a second of professional basketball.  The big question is why?  If you love sports, especially basketball, this may tickle your fancy.  The full synopsis is down below along with the trailer.

The film is directed by Josh and Benny Safdie and is produced by Adam Shopkorn.

Check it out if you can.

Full Trailer for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

JJ Abrams gives us a more in depth look at one of his space franchises...

    April 17, 2013

star-trek-into-darkness-poster-chris-pine-sliceIs it just me, or have the folks behind the marketing of Star Trek Into Darkness been keeping us in the dark (no pun intended) a bit more than necessary? I know there’s been months of debate/mystery about whether or not anyone in this film happens to be named Khan, but lost in the shuffle has been much in the way of new looks at the flick. Well, that just changed, as we get some pretty juicy stuff here in this new trailer for the film. I like what I’m seeing, and if perhaps this won’t be quite as surprisingly good as the last installment, it does appear to be something very satisfying. Take a look below.

style-2013-idol-gatsby-dicaprio_510x250If nothing else, Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby is going for opulence in extremes and if the movie fails it won’t be because of his lack in trying to entertain and wow the audience. As evidence in the final trailer for the film released today via NewNowNext, it looks like Gatsby will either be a blinding hot mess or a sumptuous thrill. A soundtrack sampler also arrived online today featuring artists like Jay-Z, Fergie (whose song is attached to the new trailer), Florence + The Machine, Gotye, Lana Del Rey and Jack White among others. Trailer Drops for ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Steinfield Set for a Big Year

Julian Fellowes adapts the William Shakespeare classic...

    April 13, 2013

HaileeSteinfield_RomeoandJulietThe new trailer dropped for the new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet starring Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth.  Encompassing an all-star cast that includes Damien Lewis of Showtime’s hit-show “Homeland,” Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti, and Lesley Manville, the film looks to be an interesting mix of star and scenery.

Guy Lodge of Hit Fix reported yesterday that the talented Steinfeld has joined Tommy Lee Jones’ next directorial effort, The Homesman in which he stars along with John Lithgow, Meryl Streep, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, Hilary Swank, and an array of celebrity actors.  After her nomination for The Coen Brothers’ True Grit (2010) in which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, the beautiful, young up-and-comer hasn’t been capitalizing on her success until now.  According to her IMDb page, she is scheduled for six films to drop this year including Romeo and Juliet and The Homesman. elysium

You can pretty much jot this one down as one of my most anticipated films this year. The trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s sophomore effort, Elysium, has dropped, and it looks terrific. Is it just me or does it have kind of a District 9 meets The Matrix vibe going on? Either way, sign me up. We saw the poster earlier today, after the jump have a look at the trailer. Elysium stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley, and is due out August 9.

CarrieFaceBloodyBigposterfullsize01You remember way back when in 2002 when Femme Fatale filmmaker Brian De Palma cut a trailer with the entire film in it? But it was so stylish and super fast that everyone loved it? Well if you did something similar, the results were less stylistic and just all around underwhelming you’d have the trailer for the Kimberly Peirce directed Carrie remake. Starring Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz, Carrie centers around a sheltered high school girl (Moretz) who unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after she is pushed too far by her peers. City of BonesI have read all the books in ‘The Mortal Instruments‘ series, doodled production design ideas, and even drafted different scripts with the hopes of the movies turning out as epically beautiful as the written words of Cassandra Clare, but after watching the trailer, I find my heart has dropped a bit. Being a fan who has written Ms. Clare letters and inquired about the adaptation of her books into film, I feel she sold out much too soon. So different from the book are the looks and feels of certain characters, which jarred my viewing experience, I’m not floored by the effects but, rather, annoyed with how cheesy it is turning out to be. Red Band Trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Only God Forgives’

The second collaboration between Gosling and Refn will hit on July 19th...

    April 3, 2013

only-god-forgives-sliceHigh up on my list of films to look forward to in 2013 is Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, which re-teams him with Ryan Gosling after their successful collaboration Drive two years ago. This time around, it’s a western of sorts, set within the world of underground fighting in Thailand. It’s also got a criminal element to it and looks absolutely gorgeous in its brutality, going by this Red Band Trailer that just dropped. The film also finally has a set release date, which is July 19th, but it might screen at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival too. Check it out after the jump and get excited for the latest pairing between Gosling and Refn! Could Kristin Scott Thomas live up to the Best Supporting Actress hype we’ve made for her?

Zal Batmanglij’s ‘The East’ gets new Poster and Trailer

Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgaard, and Ellen Page are front and center...

    March 15, 2013

TheEast_BannerThe Sundance Film Festival had an electic group of films this past year.  One of them was Zal Batmanglij’s The East starring Brit Marling, who was fantastic in last year’s Arbitrage (2012), Alexander Skarsgaard, who remains one of the last redeemable things about HBO’s “True Blood” and Academy Award nominee Ellen Page.

Batmanglij, who was responsible for directing his debut Sound of my Voice (2012), teams up with co-writer Marling to bring this seemingly mysterious and thrilling film to audiences this summer.  The synopsis is as follows via Fox Searchlight:

In THE EAST, Sarah Moss (Marling) is a brilliant operative for an elite private intelligence firm whose top objective is to ruthlessly protect the interests of their A-list corporate clientele.  She is assigned to go undercover to infiltrate an anarchist collective known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations. Living amongst them in an effort to get closer to their members, Sarah finds herself unexpectedly torn between two worlds as she starts to fall in love with the group’s charismatic leader (Skarsgard), finding her life and her priorities irrevocably changed.

Logan Hill of IndieWire had this to say from seeing it at Sundance:

“Suspenseful, ludicrous, fascinating, and utterly unsubtle, Zal Batmanglij’s “The East” plays like an unholy mash-up of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Alias.” The film builds on the themes of cult and identity that Batmanglij and his star Brit Marling explored artfully in their breakout debut “The Sound of My Voice.” But here, that psychology is in service of a fast-paced espionage potboiler.”

The full poster is below along with the film’s trailer and link to the film’s website.  The film opens in theaters May 31, 2013 and is being distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures. Read more on Zal Batmanglij’s ‘The East’ gets new Poster and Trailer…

blingAfter breaking out of the Harry potter franchise with her role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Emma Watson looks to be taking another step in the right direction, if the newly released trailer for The Bling Ring is any indication. The movie, directed by Sofia Coppola, is inspired by actual events, when a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the Internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes. Emma looks to be having a blast as one of the groups ring leaders and we could always use films that offer interesting societal commentary on our celeb obsessed culture. Check out the fun trailer after the jump!
