This week at The Awards Circuit was much ado about EVERYTHING. Before I begin recapping the monumental event that is the Toronto Film Festival — where our very own John H. Foote is currently at, sharing with us daily reviews and diary segments about the most promising films that are coming out of TIFF, right on course for Oscar season — I would like to turn our attention to the latest episode of Power Hour. In this most recent episode, the staff ponder how much weight should be given to Argo’s Oscar chances now that the raves from Venice are in. Is it a “Best Picture” contender, and will The Academy finally recognize Ben Affleck’s directorial efforts after ignoring him for both The Town and Gone Baby Gone? Personally, I never found either of those films “Best Picture” worthy — truth be told, I detested Gone Baby Gone for its convoluted story and melodramatic antics — but I have a very good feeling about Argo. Take a listen to the podcast and see what some of the staff have to say about Argo and its potential interaction with the Golden Man.We also reveal our personal favorite performances from the last decade. Got these from Guy Lodge from In Contention. Venice has just announced its winners. Paul Thomas Anderson takes Best Director while both Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix win Best Actor for The Master from the Weinstein Company. The film also took home the Special Jury Prize. Are the Weinstein’s already gearing up for a powerful Oscar campaign and breakthrough for the film? We shall see.
Check out the full list of winners below and after the jump.

Hot on the heels of the Toronto International Film Festival announcing their titles comes word from Venice about the films to be featured at the 69th Venice Film Festival. With 60 films, the selection includes a wide range of anticipated titles such as Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder, Passion from Brian De Palma and The Company You Keep directed by Robert Redford, as well as 20 films from female directors. Surprisingly, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is not included in the lineup, might this mean it will be skipping the festivals? Check out the full list after the jump! We finally know what film will start off the Venice Film Festival this year, and go figure…it wasn’t any of the high profile ones that we were expecting. The Playlist is reporting here that Mira Nair’s new movie ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ has been tapped as the Opening Night film. I can’t say this flick was on my radar whatsoever, but that’s certainly changed now. After the jump you can see a pretty detailed summary of the plot, and it sounds pretty interesting, if possibly a little overly political (not that a politics junkie like me is complaining at all). Could it be an awards player? Time will tell, but I’ll definitely have my eyes on it. See below for more…
At the end of August the Venice Film Festival will begin, and with it we’ll start to see some major Oscar contenders come out of the woodworks. Now granted, this festival isn’t usually the awards playground that Toronto is, but plenty a film has launched over in Italy (‘Black Swan’ is a strong recent example). The question right now is…what films will actually end up playing the Venice fest? We don’t know quite yet, but The Playlist is reporting here that the Italian publication La Repubblica has run a preview of the festival and suggests that a number of big name films will be premiering. Of course that means that speculation can begin about the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’, Derek Cianfrance’s ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’, Terrence Malick’s ‘To The Wonder’, Robert Redford’s ‘The Company You Keep’, Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Only God Forgives’, and Joe Wright’s ‘Anna Karenina’ making their debuts over in Europe. After the jump you can see some other potential debuts (mainly international films), but definitely take this all with a grain of salt…
Now that the Cannes Film Festival has come to a close, we can now turn our attention to the more Oscar centric festivals that we’ll be seeing in the coming months (mainly the fall). First up is the Venice Film Festival, and the new artistic director of the fest is looking to have some high profile debuts, according to The Hollywood Reporterhere. After the jump you can see a few more names and my thoughts, but right at the top is Paul Thomas Anderson with ‘The Master’ and Terrence Malick with ‘To The Wonder’. Will they actually show up? Well, check out my quick thoughts below…
Over in Venice today the Golden Lion was handed out (along with all of the usual awards that come with it), this year going to a smaller film (though supposedly a deserving one) in Faust. The full awards can be seen below, but the one I’d like to point out is Michael Fassbender winning for Shame. This could be the start of a real interesting campaign, as everyone is in agreement that he’s given an Oscar worthy performance in a film that’s going to be a real hard sell. Fox Searchlight just picked the flick up, and plans to push him and other elements of the movie hard, so it’s going to be fascinating to see this evolve. Keep an eye on that one. Hit the jump for a list of all the winners at Venice…
