  • Superhero Omissions – What Oscar Hasn’t Recognized Over the Years

With 'Iron Man 3' making a ton of money, what will it take for Oscar to notice the superhero genre...?

    May 10, 2013

IronMan3Superhero films often get a bad rap among AMPAS members.  Not too many of them think any superhero genre film has pushed the boundaries of the cinematic scope to warrant any major citations.  We often just accept that despite a movie being just freaking awesome and super entertaining à la Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) last year, there isn’t any feasible chance the Academy will recognize the mass popular film.  Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 opened to decent enough reviews, no one necessarily bringing up the “O” word so this doesn’t really apply there per se but what about the other films that are scheduled to open.  Better yet, how about the other films that have come before it.  Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming Elysium looks like a visual splendor while Star Trek Into Darkness looks to capture the magic of its predecessor one more time.  Not superhero films but genre films nonetheless that have an extra hard time being recognized no matter the quality.

When Heath Ledger was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his diabolical performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008), there’s no real way of ever knowing if Ledger hadn’t passed away prior to the film’s release, would he still have had all the momentum and get the AMPAS love he very much deserved.   Read more on Superhero Omissions – What Oscar Hasn’t Recognized Over the Years…

‘Man of Steel’ New Trailer Gives Some Plot Details!

We also get to see General Zod for the first time...

    April 17, 2013

Zod-Man-of-Steel-Michael Shannon_thumb[1]I was a big fan of the initial Trailer for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, but it certainly didn’t show us too much of the movie, only a feel for what type of emotions it would be going for. That’s largely remained the case, but with the film getting closer to a release date, a new Trailer has emerged, and it’s managed to mesh those artier ambitions with some actual footage from the movie that shows us Superman in action. Besides more of star Henry Cavill, we also get to see Michael Shannon as General Zod, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner as Pa Kent, and Russell Crowe as Jor-El. I liked what I saw a bit, and it definitely had a Christopher Nolan-ish vibe to it.  It’s also the rare trailer that’s over three minutes long these days. You can judge for yourself below. Cover

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is one of the most anticipated films of 2013, so Empire Magazine is dedicating the cover of its March issue to promoting the film. Henry Cavill (Superman/Clark Kent) graces the cover, giving us one of the best looks we’ve had so far at the new suit. We’re all hoping that executive producer Christopher Nolan can influence the filmmakers in the direction of what he did with The Dark Knight trilogy, and we’ll find out June 14th, 2013. Empire’s March edition hits newsstands this Thursday, January 31st. Have a look at the cover after the jump.

manofsteel_logoSo I know we’ve been all awards obsessed for the past few days, but can we take a moment to appreciate two trailers released this week? Warner Bros premiered footage from both of Man of Steel and Pacific Rim at Comic-Con and have been surprisingly quiet about the films till now. First up is the beautiful trailer for Man of Steel about the best superhero of all time aka Superman. I want to be cautiously optimistic cause Zack Snyder is the master of delivering a great trailer and a lackluster film, but I can’t help being excited about the direction they are taking Superman.

The Christopher Nolan produced, Zack Snyder directed Man of Steel looks to be trying to conquer a different dimension as Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have announced that the film will be getting the 3D post conversion treatment. Snyder said that the film was designed and photographed in a way that would allow for an easier post conversion process. The film, set to be released on June 14, 2013, will now be getting a 3D release in select theaters, in addition to the 2D and IMAX showings. Two Teaser Trailers for ‘Man of Steel’

    Superman is back next summer...

    July 22, 2012

It may be hard to believe, but we now live in a world where both ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ have come out in theaters. What superhero is there left now to get excited over? Why, Superman of course, and Christopher Nolan/Zack Snyder’s re-imagining of the character. Warner Brothers let loose yesterday with the first two Teaser Trailers for their upcoming reboot ‘Man of Steel’, and I think they’re great (true teasers, and honestly the early comments saying it’s as if Terrence Malick directed it instead of Snyder look on the money to me). You can take a look at them after the jump and see what you think of course. They’re pretty much identical except for one has Jonathan Kent (played by Kevin Costner) narrating and one has Jor-El (played by Russell Crowe) doing so. Take a gander below…

First Plot Synopsis for ‘Man of Steel’!

Here's a taste of what the new Superman film will be about...

    July 9, 2012

Once a certain Bat-related film opens in a little under two weeks, a big change in focus is going to be coming for Warner Brothers. Yes, they have another superhero they’ve got to concentrate on, and it’s the man of steel himself…Superman. With Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ about a year away, it’s fair to assume a lot is going to begin coming out soon, most notably at Comic-Con and likely in the form of a teaser trailer attached to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. The official IMAX website was in on the action earlier too, posting a small plot synopsis for the film (which pretty much also confirms a 3D retrofitting of the flick). It’s since been taken down, but after the jump you can see it right here at The Awards Circuit. I’m hoping for good things from this caped hero, but time will tell…

Whether it’s his Oscar winning music from The Lion King or his energetic tunes for Sherlock Homes, Hans Zimmer has crafted some really great scores over the years. Now he’s scheduled for his next big challenge. According to The Hollywood Reporter Zimmer has signed on to score the Zack Snyder directed, Christopher Nolan produced, Superman reboot titled Man of Steel.  The reboot, which stars Henry Cavill as Superman, will take us back to the character’s origin and his first battle with Zod (Michael Shannon).

A misogynistic, offensive, self-gratifying debacle from Zack Snyder…

Zack Snyder has described “Sucker Punch” as “‘Alice In Wonderland’ meets machine guns.”  The film’s tag line says “You Will Be Unprepared.”  Hmmm…

I have nothing nice to share with you about Zack Snyder’s embarrassing and onanistic “Sucker Punch.” It is arguably the nastiest and most vile PG-13 film ever released and exists simply to give 16-year old boys something to occupy their “dreams.” Clad in bustiers, short skirts, whorehouse gear, and stilettos, the young girls women of “Sucker Punch” are flying World War II bombers, slaying gigantic fire-breathing dragons, waging war against Nazi zombies, and taking part in countless other ridiculous duels and challenges.

But why? Isn’t that the ultimate? Hot underage-looking girls in next to nothing laying waste to everything in their paths? Can all the 12-20 year old boys put your hands up!!?!?!

Let’s talk about that why, shall we? And I will not try and spoil things, but part of me wants to. In my heart of hearts, I really find “Sucker Punch” deplorable and contemptible.

The premise of “Sucker Punch” focuses on a teenage girl, identified only as Babydoll (Emily Browning), who survives a horrific attack by her stepfather. On this fateful night, Babydoll loses her mother and sister and while she retains her life, she is framed for the murders by her stepfather and sold to a mental health facility known as the Lennox House.
