Rooney Mara to star in new Spike Jones film and ‘Brooklyn’ adaptation

After showing her acting mettle in two David Fincher films, The Social Network and her Oscar nominated turn in Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara has been seriously in demand. She’s just finished filming a movie with Terrence Malick and is currently shooting The Bitter Pill with Steven Soderbergh and has added two more films to her slate. According to The Hollywood Reporter Rooney is attached to star in an adaptation of Brooklyn, about a young woman who is torn between her family in Ireland and and American man in the 1950s. Mara has also signed on to take over for Carey Mulligan in a new Spike Jonze film about a man who falls in love with a computer voice.

It’s always exciting to see actors challenge themselves by choosing a variety of roles and those roles Mara has signed on for couldn’t be more different. With Brooklyn, she’ll be acting in a period piece brought to the screen by the team who made An Education, presumably giving us a chance to see Rooney explore her softer, more romantic side . The Spike Jonze film, a modern piece starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Samantha Morton, gives Mara a chance work with an interesting filmmaker and a story that sounds rife with comedy.

When negotiations are finalized, Rooney Mara will film the Spike Jones movie after completing The Bitter Pill. The Brooklyn adaptation will most likely film next Spring to ensure that Mara will have time to finish her other movies.
