‘The Hobbit’ submits an Original Song for Oscar Consideration

The Warner Brothers Awards Site has had their roster listed for a few weeks now.  Big contenders like Ben Affleck’s Argo, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and The Wachowski Siblings and Tom Tykwer’s Cloud Atlas have their respective categories listed.  Even Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike is pushing a campaign for Matthew McConaughey and the rest of the cast.  Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, a film that our own Mark Johnson has stood by all year-long, has started listing their categories for consideration.

Jackson’s film has their expected categories like Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay in their “For Your Consideration” listing.  Predictably Martin Freeman, who plays the young Bilbo Baggins, will be campaigned as a Lead Actor.  In the Supporting Actor category, the studio has Ian McKellen, who is reprising his role as Gandalf in the top spot along with Andy Serkis who reprises his role of Gollum.  A new and unexpected addition and playing the role of Thorin Oaskenshield, Richard Armitage best known for his appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) is also listed in contention.  Could Armitrage be something worth considering?

Academy Award Winner Cate Blanchett as the beautiful Galadriel is the only actress listed under the Supporting Actress category.  What’s notable is the film has an Original Song, “Song of the Lonely Mountain” written and performed by Neil Finn and music by David Donaldson, Steve Roche, Janet Roddick, and David Long.  In the original trilogy, Annie Lennox’s “Into the West” won the Oscar from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).

Currently predicting the film to be nominated in the newly renamed Production Design category along with Makeup and Hairstyling, the film may also find itself singing for the Academy Award.  The film is also listed in contention for other categories like Cinematography and Visual Effects, unfortunately the film’s trailer has left many, including myself, cold on sight.

The film opens December 14, 2012 in theaters everywhere.
