The distribution rights to Dallas Buyers Club, a drama in which Matthew McConaughey plays a man dying of AIDS, has been acquired by Focus Features. The film, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, is based on the true story of Ron Woodruff (McConaughey), who after being diagnosed with the AIDS virus began to sneak alternative drugs into the country to help him – and others – suffering from the disease. Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner also star, and the film is scheduled for a release during the later part of 2013. Will this be the film to earn Matthew McConaughey his first Oscar nom? Following an outstanding year in 2012 (Killer Joe, The Paperboy, Magic Mike, and Bernie), many feel the actor has proven he has the chops to reach the next stage of his career, and with an equally interesting 2013 ahead of him (he also stars in Jeff Nichols’ Mud and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street), this could be the year AMPAS finally takes notice.
