Last year, The Weinstein Company (TWC) helped the Norwegian film, Kon-Tiki, receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. That film happens to be based on the documentary of the same name which happened to win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature (1951). TWC has recently announced that the doc that inspired the film will air on the Sundance Channel on May 11 at 12:15 PM EST. Have a look at the official release after the jump.

New York, NY – May 2, 2013 – The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that KON-TIKI, the 1951 documentary which inspired their recent successful feature-length release of the same name, will be airing exclusively on the Sundance Channel on May 11th, 2013 at 12:15pm ET/9:15am PT. The network will follow the airing of the documentary with a behind-the-scenes featurette called KON-TIKI: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY, hosted on camera by EXTRA’s Maria Menounos.

The airing of Thor Heyerdahl’s documentary on Sundance Channel comes in celebration of TWC’s release of the feature of the same name; shot both in English and in Norwegian, the latter version was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2013 Academy Awards. The film, which premiered in New York and Los Angeles theaters on April 26th, was directed by Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg.

KON-TIKI: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY, a 30-minute making-of piece on the film, includes interviews with Roenning and Sandberg, as well as lead actor Pål Hagen, who plays Heyerdahl, and screenwriter Petter Skavlan.

KON-TIKI was directed by scientist Heyerdahl and awarded the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature in 1951; the film was comprised of footage he shot while sailing from Peru to Polynesia on a small wooden raft, a voyage he completed in order to support his theory that Polynesia could have been originally settled by South Americans crossing the Pacific. The 4,300 mile journey took Heyerdahl and his crew 101 days from start to finish.
