’50 Shades of Grey’ to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson

MV5BMTc2NzMyOTk0MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTY1NzMxOQ@@._V1._SY314_CR56,0,214,314_50 Shades of Grey seems to be one of the hottest properties in Hollywood right now with everyone from Gus Van Sant to Joe Wright apparently wanting the directorial gig. You would therefore be surprised to learn that Nowhere director Sam Taylor-Johnson has been chosen to helm the film. Outside of directing that film, Sam has been well-regarded as a photographer and video artist, in addition to her being most widely searched for due to her marriage with actor Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass).

Though it would have been interesting to see those names, it’s nice to see a woman director being chosen to help a buzzy project, especially one with as large a female fan base as this one. It’s also good to see that producers took a shot with someone from the artistic world doing a film like this. There are a lot of parallels that could be made to someone like Steve McQueen, so experience isn’t necessarily something required to be a good director.

Much of the news now will turn to the casting of the project, with her husband already ruled out of starring in the film and Felicity Jones name being bandied about.

What do you all think of this choice?
