With the recent passing of the talented character actor James Gandolfini, the staff and I discussed on this week’s Power Hour, some of the great posthumous performances from many actors that went too soon. With many of us put on the spot, it was hard to think of some prime occurrences. I’ve taken to task and looked for some of the greatest performances of actors that may have never seen their works on the big screens. I’m sure there’s one certain performance in a superhero film that many will be screaming from the rooftops and it is perhaps our finest example as it stands today.
To make it clear, this is not a “best of” list and should not be treated as such. These are five examples of some stunning works that may or may not have gained notice. If you have any choices or citations, please include it in the comment section.
As for James Gandolfini, he completed two works that will be released in the next two years. The first is the Untitled film from writer/director Nicole Holofcener. The film tells the story of a divorced woman who decides to start dating but then realizes he is her friend’s ex-husband. Labeled as a comedy, the film may not have any chance at awards traction but you never know. The film also stars Academy Award nominee Toni Collette and Emmy Winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Next year, Gandolfini may have a substantial shot as he will have a role in Michael R. Roskam’s Animal Rescue, a film based on a novel by Dennis Lehane who wrote “Shutter Island.” The film stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and Matthias Schoenaerts and tells the story of a lost pit bull, a scam artist, and a killing, and how their all connected.
