Well if the Musical/Comedy categories at the Globes weren’t already stacked to the brim. It seems as though David O. Russell’s American Hustle has announced it will not compete in the Drama category at the Golden Globes, rather in the Comedy categories to join The Wolf of Wall Street, August: Osage County, and another half-dozen contenders.
Typically, studios decide on a Comedy push if they feel it may be easier to get their films recognized by the HFPA but in a year where many films and performers are making the switch, the drama categories will be left wide open for some smaller films to get noticed.
For the film itself, this bodes well for Christian Bale especially to land a nomination in Best Actor to likely go up against Bruce Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Oscar Isaac. There’s even a remote chance that Bale ends up double nominated, along with his other work in Out of the Furnace. For Lead Actress Amy Adams, her road to recognition will have some more hurdles. The four-time Golden Globe nominated actress will compete against Meryl Streep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Julie Delpy. If all goes well, she may be in line for her first Globe win.
I’ve updated the Golden Globe Predictions page to reflect the changes. Check them out!
