Weekend Openings: 12/13/2013

The second part of The Hobbit trilogy opens this weekend as Bilbo and the dwarves aim for The Desolation of Smaug.  They finally come to face the infamous, miserly dragon, wonderfully voiced by the man of the moment, Benedict Cumberbatch, and subject him to his fate.  It’ll pretty much dominate the box office this weekend more than handily, seeing as how its only “competition” is Tyler Perry’s annual and obligatory contribution to fine film-making.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Oscar Potential: The first part to Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of Tolkien’s beloved fantasy tale collected its share of Oscar nominations in the technical and music categories, so expect more of the same this year.  Check out Joey’s review.
