American Cinema Editors Awards Choose ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Captain Phillips,’ and ‘Frozen’

Bf701iwCcAEhA6bWell, this precursor may have complicated things just a bit. Normally I like to predict the Best Picture winner to also take the Best Film Editing Oscar as well, though I often look to the American Cinema Editors awards (or the ACE Eddies) for guidance. Last night, they gave out their top prizes, and they did their best to make the Film Editing category at the Academy Awards as wide open as possible. The Drama Editing prize went to Captain Phillips over more likely Best Picture winners/frontrunners 12 Years a Slave and Gravity (plus other nominees Her and Saving Mr. Banks). As for the Comedy prize, that interestingly enough went to American Hustle over The Wolf of Wall Street (as well as August: Osage County, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Nebraska). The Academy has 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, and Gravity to choose from in their category, so while some had initially pegged it a race between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity here, could it now be between American Hustle and Captain Phillips? Time will tell. You can see all of the awards below (Frozen won the Animated prize for example, not that anyone expected otherwise), but now’s a good time to start pondering this Oscar category. It’s certainly a more interesting race than it was merely 24 hours ago…
