Nominee: Woody Allen for Blue Jasmine
Oscar Scene: “Can you please not fight in here?! I don’t think I can take it anymore! For some reason, my Xanax isn’t kicking in.”
Remember when I said that the whole Dylan Farrow controversy won’t be too much of a hindrance to Cate Blanchett? Well, maybe if Blue Jasmine was a serious contender for Best Picture Woody Allen might not have had too much to worry about, but combine the controversy with the film’s smallish reputation (outside of its performances) and his three previous wins in the category already and you have a film that’s DOA in this race. That’s a shame too, because for my money this is the strongest stuff he’s written in years and easily superior to Midnight in Paris. I imagine that he has a lot more on his mind than the results of his 16th nomination in this category, but here’s to hoping his future screenplays are as rewarding to his actors and audience as this one.
