Nominee: Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack for Dallas Buyers Club
Oscar Scene: “Oh, I’m the drug dealer?! No, you’re the fucking drug dealer. I mean, goddamn, people are dyin’ and y’all are up there afraid that we’re gonna find an alternative without you!”
The Cinderella story of the year started off the race as seemingly set for only acting nods before it became shockingly clear that Hollywood was very taken by the whole film. At this point in the race the nomination will have to settle for being the reward here, though Borten and Wallack should pat themselves on the back for providing their actors with such vivid, interesting characters for McConaughey and Leto to develop, even if the framework they’re imposing on Ron Woodruff’s story works only sporadically and the triumphant register of its conclusion doesn’t feel entirely earned.
