Six Spot #10: Best Supporting Actress 2008

Oscar Question

Welcome back to The Six Spot! In case you missed last week’s 2012 Best Actress Six Spot, you can catch it here.

Here, we begin the 10th Six Spot with a category I’ve been planning on doing for a long time: the 2008 Best Supporting Actress race. Why have I waited so long to do this category? What’s so exciting about it? If you were following closely in 2008, you know that Kate Winslet was a surefire bet to win that category going into Oscar nomination morning….but only to be nominated (and later win) in Lead. Following Barry Fitzgerald’s dual 1944 nominations for both Lead and Supporting for the same performance in Going My Way, the Academy changed their rules regarding nominations. If an actor gets votes in two categories for the same performance, whichever category has the more number of votes will be the one that “counts,” and the other is ignored for purposes of nominations in that category. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb saying that surely Kate Winslet got enough votes to be nominated in Supporting Actress—but she got more votes in Lead.

So, assuming she would have been a nominee in Supporting, that means one of the actual 2008 Best Supporting Actress nominees was the Six Spot, and thus landed a nomination because of Winslet’s dismissed votes. Which of the Oscar-nominated ladies almost wasn’t a nominee? We’ll find out in this Very Special Edition of the Six Spot!

Here goes nothing!
