Of the many smaller Oscar contenders for this year, one of the ones that intrigues me quite a bit is Wild, which is Jean-Marc Vallée‘s follow up to Dallas Buyers Club. It stars Reese Witherspoon in a rather baity role and must have some kind of an awards appeal to Fox Searchlight, since they’ve just given it a December 5th release date. Obviously, that’s in the heart of the season, so it could be a sign of confidence. Written by Nick Hornby, Witherspoon also has Laura Dern, Gaby Hoffman, and Thomas Sadoski in the cast as well. Below you can see an official synopsis of the film, but I think we should be on the lookout for this one. Witherspoon might be able to make a play for a Best Actress nomination. Time will tell, but I think we might be underestimating her.
Here’s the synopsis:
With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon)has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. WILD powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.
