It’s time to cross one more film off our lists, at least for 2014. Pierre Morel’s The Gunman starring two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, and Idris Elba has been given a February 20, 2015 release by Open Road Films.
The three year old distribution company announced today that the thriller will not compete for next year’s Oscar ceremony. The film tells the story of an international operative named Martin Terrier (Sean Penn), who wants out of the game, so he can settle down with his longtime love (Jasmine Trinca). The organization he works for has other plans in mind, and he is forced to go on the run across Europe. By the sound of it, it didn’t sound too much like an Oscar player anyway but it is worth noting.
Open Road Films has already released Jon Faverau’s Chef, which has received praise from many critics. The studio also has Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno due out in September and Jon Stewart’s highly anticipated Rosewater with Gael Garcia Bernal and Shohreh Aghdashloo set to be released sometime this year The studio attempted to find success with Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects last year but ultimately came up short.
