I always hold out hope that Johnny Depp is one role away from really getting back on track and not just being a living cartoon character. A few years back it seemed like that was going to be the case with Public Enemies, but that wasn’t the Oscar contender many were hoping. Well, next year Depp is playing a gangster again in the film once known as Black Mass. He’ll be playing Whitey Bulger (the inspiration for Jack Nicholson‘s character in The Departed) under the direction of Scott Cooper. Filming is currently underway (you can see Depp’s look above) and we’ll be seeing the flick next year on September 18th, putting it right in the awards season. You can see a bit more below, but stay tuned to see if this one can be a contender…
Here’s the story from The Hollywood Reporter:
Johnny Depp’s new film, in which he will play Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, will be released Sept. 18, 2015, studio Warner Bros. announced Monday.
The date would appear to make the movie a prime candidate for a debut somewhere on the 2015 Venice/Telluride/Toronto film festival awards circuit.
Scott Cooper is directing the crime drama for Warners and Cross Creek. It also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Adam Scott, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple and Jesse Plemons.
The project is based on the book Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil’s Deal, by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. Originally called Black Mass, the project is currently untitled.
