NEWS ROUNDUP: Alec Baldwin Is Busy: MI:5, Robert Ford, And More

When was the last time you saw Alec Baldwin? Most likely in the tabloids, but how about onscreen (small or big)? “Blue Jasmine“? The “30 Rock” finale? “Law and Order: SVU“?  Well, he’s back and back with a vengeance. (Vengeance against the paparazzi, MSNBC, show business? Who knows.) After his New York Magazine adieu to public appearances (but not acting) and taking a few months off (reportedly turning down a few roles) in order to stay close to home with wife and newborn daughter, Baldwin now has a string of high-profile projects on the docket involving the likes of Tom Cruise, Will Smith, and Warren Beatty.

Yesterday, Deadline broke the news that Baldwin has “two killer movie projects lined up” and is in talks with N.B.C. about a possible one-hour cable series. Reportedly, Baldwin has been approached to play the head of the C.I.A. in the upcoming “Mission: Impossible 5” (with shooting starting next month and a Christmas 2015 release), joining Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg, and to join the to-be-titled Peter Landesman (“Parkland“) project about football concussions (based on the 2009 GQ article “Game Brain”) starring Will Smith. As for the one-hour cable series, the show is said to center around a Robert Ford-type character (you know, the crack-smoking mayor of Toronto), with Baldwin as the lead and the pilot penned by journalist Wells Tower. These being early days, we don’t have much word on the show’s tone yet, but we’re hoping they play to Baldwin’s comedic strengths (Maybe “Veep” meets “Spin City” with a hint of Jack Donaghy?) rather than try something more politically, dramatically incisive (Remember that time Baldwin hosted a show on MSNBC? Yeah…).

All of this is on top of the slew of Baldwin projects currently in post-production: a cameo in “Torrente 5” (previous cameos in the Spanish comedy crime franchise include Javier Bardem, John Landis, and Oliver Stone), Untitled Cameron Crowe Project about a military contractor reflecting on his life (cast includes Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bradley Cooper, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride), Untitled Warren Beatty Project about Howard Hughes and a late-in-life fling, with Baldwin playing Hughes’s lawyer (cast includes Beatty, Lily Collins, Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Candice Bergen, Martin Sheen, Oliver Platt, Megan Hilty, Chace Crawford), and “Still Alice” with Baldwin playing the husband of a professor dealing with early Alzheimer’s (cast includes Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, Hunter Parrish and here are early set pics over on Awards Daily).

Whether you’ve missed Baldwin or not, you’ll be seeing a lot more from him on the big and small screens in the upcoming months, though not on any talk show couches soon.
