David O. Russell wants Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro to co-star in ‘Joy’

cooper-de-niro-mainWell, consider me shocked. Oh, wait, what’s the opposite of shocked? Anyway, it appears that David O. Russell is planning to not only team up with Jennifer Lawrence once more, he’s hoping to bring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro along for the ride again as well. A story went around earlier that has Russell saying that he’s hoping to cast Cooper and De Niro alongside Lawrence in Joy, which is their next film together, and now a report has De Niro actually in talks. It’s a biopic about entrepeneur and self made millionaire Joy Mangano, who went from a struggling single mother on Long Island to a business mogul with the mop she invented. Russell is directing and Annie Mumolo is writing, though you’d have to expect that he’ll take a crack at the script and get a co-writer credit before all is said and done. Lawrence is the only official cast member right now, but I have no reason to not expect both Cooper and De Niro to be a part of this, particularly the latter, who as mentioned above is in negotiations already (he’d play Mangano’s father). They both have done great work with Russell previously (the former doing some of the best work of his career while the latter been able to regain some of his lost respect), so I have no issues here. Joy hits theaters on Christmas Day next year, so it’s clear that this is meant to be an Oscar contender, perhaps even scoring Lawrence another Academy Award. Stay tuned for more on Joy between now and its holiday 2015 release date.
