One of the more well liked films to play at the most recent Sundance Film Festival, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl will hope to go where The Fault in Our Stars couldn’t last year, which is to say…the Oscar ceremony. It certainly has the pedigree, at it took the top two prizes at the festival, both of which were won by Whiplash last year. The First Trailer has hit, and while it appears potentially a bit quirky, it does look like something that can go far. If the reviews from the fest were to be believed, you’ll laugh and cry in equal measure. Thomas Mann, Olivia Cooke, and RJ Cyler have the three title roles, with supporting work on hand from Connie Britton, Nick Offerman, Jon Bernthal, and Molly Shannon, so there’s a solid cast in place. If it avoids the cliches of being a “Sundance film” while telling the story of a girl with cancer and the teenage filmmakers who befriend her, then this is well worth keeping an eye on. Fox Searchlight is very high on the movie, dating it for June 12th, so we’re only a few months away from scoping it out for ourselves.
Take a look below and see what you think. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directs this tale, with Jesse Andrews adapting his own novel. Stay tuned folks, we’ll have more on Me and Earl and the Dying Girl over the next few months.
