Open Road Acquires the Boxing Drama ‘Bleed for This’ starring Miles Teller

Bleed-for-This1It looks like the boxing picture is becoming the go to sports sub-genre for awards season again. Already this year we have Harvey Weinstein trying hard to get Jake Gyllenhaal a Best Actor Oscar nomination/win for Southpaw, as well as his recently acquired Roberto Duran biopic Hands of Stone (though that one seems poised for a 2016 release), plus Warner Brothers seems to think highly of the Rocky spinoff Creed, considering they have it set to open on Thanksgiving (don’t laugh, the talent is there). Well, make room for one more in 2015, most likely. Reports over at the Cannes Film Festival marketplace have Open Road acquiring the true life tale Bleed for This, which stars Miles Teller as fighter Vinny Pazienza, who came back from a life threatening injury to become champion. Aaron Eckhart will play his trainer and Ben Younger writes/directs. This could potentially be an Academy Award vehicle for Teller, especially if Open Road can make this anything close to last year’s success story Nightcrawler. Rumor has it that there were bigger bids for the flick, but what the distributor did last awards season wound up a deciding factor. Boxers tend to be awards bait, so don’t sleep on this title. Stay tuned for more on Bleed for This when we have it, but it’s one to keep an eye on for sure…
