‘Jurassic World’ could set the new Opening Weekend box office record

jurassic-world-super-bowl-trailer-screenshot-indominus-rex-clawsWow. We won’t know the official box office numbers until sometime later on today/tomorrow, but it seems like Jurassic World has been able to shockingly come out of the blue and knock off The Avengers. Yes, the latest reports have it making between $207 and $210 million at the box office, which (provided it’s not at the lowest end of the estimates) would make it the biggest opening weekend of all time. The Avengers opened to $207.4, so while some had speculated that last month’s Avengers: Age of Ultron could have toppled that Marvel flick, instead it’s the Jurassic Park sequel that does it. I like Jurassic World just fine (I’d give it a very mild thumbs up), but this is an utter shock. Also, it does make me wonder if Star Wars: The Force Awakens could be poised to do even bigger business than expected (and some already expect it to contend for Avatar‘s all time record), considering how much nostalgia fueled this success story. Hopefully we’ll know for sure soon, but Colin Trevorrow and company (not to mention Universal) must be very happy campers right now. If this holds, congrats to the Jurassic World team. The park is certainly open for business, that much is sure…
