Nothing helps the buzz of a potentially questionable film more than a great Trailer. Up until now, you could be forgiven for shrugging off the pseudo Rocky sequel/spinoff Creed, since that franchise was not in any way in need of another installment. Despite the presence of Ryan Coogler as the filmmaker and Michael B. Jordan in the title role, there wasn’t especially anyone clamoring for more of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa. Well, the Italian Stallion is back in Creed, but strictly as a trainer, helping former rival turn friend Apollo Creed’s son follow in his footsteps. The First Trailer has dropped and it’s actually pretty compelling stuff. Coogler (who directs and co-writes with Aaron Covington) has the gritty feel of Fruitvale Station still on display, while Jordan looks terrific. The film also has Tessa Thompson in the cast and a Thanksgiving release date, so it’s possible that this also has awards contention on its mind. We’ll see what the movie can do on November 25th, but take a look at the Trailer below. It was a curiosity before, but Creed now very much has my attention. Stay tuned to see if Oscar winds up taking notice as well.
