‘Everest’ will open the 2015 Venice Film Festival

maxresdefaultSlowly but surely, the fall festival season is beginning to take shape. We already know that The Walk will be the Opening Night selection of the latest incarnation of the New York Film Festival, but now the Venice Film Festival has announced Everest as its opener. The survival drama will play Out of Competition but open up the fest, which begins on September 2nd. This could further the potential Oscar hopes of this one, something that began with that strong trailer a few weeks ago. The film has quite the pedigree in certain places, as it was written by Simon Beaufoy and William Nicholson, as well as stars Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes, Michael Kelly, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, Sam Worthington, and Robin Wright. The X factor here is director Baltasar Kormákur, who has yet to blow me away. If he’s on top of his game, then this could be a movie to contend with. Everest opens on September 18th, so it won’t be a long wait from the Venice debut on the 2nd to stateside bow. Stay tuned, as this flick could be a bigger player than expected. Time will tell, but it’s got a decent chance at recognition now, that’s for sure…
