Venice 2015: Instant reactions to ‘Spotlight’

Spotlight_film_2015After the less than positive reception (and that’s putting it incredibly delicately) that Tom McCarthy was given with his last film The Cobbler, it might have been fair to wonder if the love affair that critics had with the filmmaker was over. In some ways, his new movie Spotlight, which just debuted today at the Venice Film Festival was going to be a litmus test. Would the pundits embrace him again and launch his title into the Oscar race, or would they reject the flick and attempt to make him the latest whipping boy? Well, aside from a somewhat dismissive mixed review from The Hollywood Reporter, almost everyone at Venice is all about this film. Some have called it a surefire Academy Award player, while nearly all of the review put it high up in the pantheon of investigative journalism movies. McCarthy’s ensemble movie stars Billy Crudup, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, and Stanley Tucci in a look at how the abbesses of the Catholic Church were uncovered by the Boston Globe. Take a look at the first reactions before and stay tuned for much more on Spotlight, which opens on November 6th. I think we have a potentially big player on our hands folks…
