This is not a joke: a Lonely Island feature film is heading to theaters in June, and the title of the comedy is set to be “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.” The film’s star, Andy Samberg, confirmed the news on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday evening.
The film stars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, all members of The Lonely Island. The group first appeared on “Saturday Night Live” from 2005 to 2011. They shot to fame for their “Digital Shorts” music videos that included “Dick in a Box,” “Jizz in My Pants,” “Mother Lovers,” “Like a Boss,” and more. At the time, Samberg was a cast member and Taccone and Schaffer were writers for the show.
The popularity of the shorts led to two albums: 2009’s “Incredibad” and 2011’s “Turtleneck & Chain.”
In the film, Samberg portrays singer/rapper Conner4Real, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Connor “is struggling to maintain his popularity after his ‘difficult second album’ tanks and he manfully tries to remain relevant by reuniting with his former boy band.”
The film also stars Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph.
“Popstar” is written by Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone. Schaffer and Taccone co-directed and Judd Apatow produced with Rodney Rothman, Samberg, Taccone and Schaffer.
The film is right up Apatow’s alley. The director, producer and writer has worked on such comedies as: “Knocked Up,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Bridesmaids,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Get Him to the Greek,” “This Is 40,” “Funny People” and “Trainwreck.”
“Popstar” will open on June 3.
