9. “Canned Heat” – Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

When I saw Napoleon Dynamite in 2004 I remember thinking, “What the hell am I watching?” Director Jared Hess creates a film utterly bizarre in tone but uncaring about being accepted. Whether you like the movie or not, Napoleon’s (Jon Heder) dance rocks. The mild-mannered boy has tried his damndest to have some semblance of a life, ultimately ending up on stage, judged by his peers. What does he do? Dance to Jamiroquai, of course! Napoleon’s dance is uncomfortable, awkward and hilarious. It’s endearing because he’s finally allowing himself to be comfortable, and just as the audience gets into the groove the music abruptly cuts, shattering Napoleon’s bubble.
