Historical Circuit: Top 35 Dance Sequences in Film, Vol. 2

3. “Cell Block Tango” – Chicago (2002)

Watch this and then watch “Be Italian.” Tell me it isn’t the same sequence. It was extremely difficult not putting Chicago on this list at least five times because of how many fantastic dance sequences there are. “Cell Block Tango” is an exposition dance – telling us the history of each of Cook County’s “six merry murderesses” – complete with black humor, tango and ballet. The ultimate tale of women scorned it’s a stew of different styles, all with slinky poise. Each of the women, whether they believe it or not, claims they didn’t do it, but “would you tell them that [they] were wrong?”
