Historical Circuit: Top 35 Dance Sequences in Film, Vol. 2

29. “Do You Only Wanna Dance” – Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights (2004)

In the interest of full disclosure: I saw this unofficial sequel before I saw the original. Yes, I’m a horrible person. I don’t have nearly the antipathy for this sequel as most people do. The Cuban setting gives off some great production and costume design, and you can’t go wrong with any dancing that’s Latin inspired – you’ll probably get sick of all the tangos and congas on this list. The film ends where you’d expect, with our star-crossed lovers strutting their stuff in the big dance contest. I give this the edge over Take the Lead for its female heroine. Take’s the Lead dance has our female spurning the two men via dance, but Dirty Dancing 2 sees our heroine embrace her sexuality, both in the dance and through her costuming – which ends up being sexier than the constant shots of the uncomfortable audience, obviously scandalized at how dirty that dancing is!
