Historical Circuit: Top 35 Dance Sequences in Film, Vol. 2

27. “Hip to Be Square” – American Psycho (2000)

One of a handful of movies that reconfigured the way I looked at cinema American Psycho also made me rethink how I interpreted dance sequences. Watching Christian Bale moonwalk and shake as he talks about Huey Lewis and the News before mercilessly axe-murdering Jared Leto left me laughing while being simultaneously horrified by the violence, ultimately the point of the scene. American Psycho author Brett Easton Ellis said this is the point where he turned the movie off in irritation, but it left me appreciating the character of Patrick Bateman all the more. Just because he’s gonna kill you – with an impeccable looking axe, no less – that’s not reason enough not to put a little boogie in it!
