Back in January, actress Amber Heard was rumored to be starring in the upcoming “Justice League” and “Aquaman” films as Mera, eventual queen of Atlantis and love interest of Aquaman. Now, the actress is officially confirming the news, as well as providing a few details on the character’s look.
“It’s interesting,” Heard told Entertainment Tonight, confirming the role. “I’m wearing, like, a half suit of armor, half scales. It’s strange. But we’re in the process of building it now. It’s coming along.”
In January multiple sources confirmed Heard would play the role of Mera. In the comics, she has the ability to control water and has limited telepathy, among other strengths.
Heard will be starring opposite Jason Momoa, who has been cast as Aquaman and has a rumored appearance in the upcoming film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Momoa, as well as Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Ezra Miller (The Flash) are all said to show up briefly in the film for the first look at the Justice League, before reprising their roles in the “Justice League” standalone film.
“Justice League Part One” is said to begin production this spring. Zack Snyder is set to direct, with a release date of Nov. 17.
The standalone “Aquaman” pic is being directed by James Wan. That film is washing onshore come July 27, 2018. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the script for the film is undergoing what is known as a dual track development, meaning that two different scripts for the film are being worked on at the same time.
Plot details surrounding the film are understandably scant, but the official logline from Warner Bros. reads:
“An icon for over 70 years, Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.”
The news follows a busy year for Heard. Heard was last seen in “Magic Mike XXL,” as well as in “The Danish Girl” with Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. She also appeared in “The Adderall Diaries” opposite James Franco.
