Director, writer and producer Luc Besson is providing the first look at his upcoming sci-fi film “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.”
In the film, which is set in the 28th century, Cara Delevingne (“Suicide Squad“) and Dane DeHaan (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2“) are two spatio-temporal agents who travel through time and space to protect humankind. Throughout their journeys, the duo conduct various missions such as space rescues, interplanetary exploration, diplomacy and galactic alien negotiations. The pair must only follow one rule: do not change the course of history.
In the first look provided via Besson’s Instagram account, Delevingne and DeHaan can be seen in their blue bodysuits, with Besson cheekily behind them.
The film, which has a massive budget of $180 million, is currently filming at Besson’s Cité du Cinéma studios near Paris. Besson adapted the screenplay based on Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin’s beloved French sci-fi comics, “Valérian and Laureline.”
Besson is known for his critically acclaimed films “Léon: The Professional” and “The Messenger: The Story of the Joan of Arc.” He is also known for 1997’s “The Fifth Element” and 2014’s “Lucy” starring Scarlett Johansson.
Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu are also starring in the film in unspecified roles.
The Instagram pic can be seen below. In the caption, Besson promises more behind-the-scenes looks at the film will be coming tomorrow by way of Entertainment Weekly.
“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is due out on July 21, 2017.
