Principal photography on Christopher Nolan‘s epic action thriller “Dunkirk” is currently underway in Dunkirk, France, Warner Bros. announced today.
In the announcement, the studio also provided the film’s first brief synopsis: “‘Dunkirk’ opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”
Although the release didn’t come with any official set photos, photographer Pierre Volot has been busy taking his own pictures from the set. His photos offer the first look at the stunning imagery that will appear in the film, as well as Nolan hard at work. The pictures can be viewed here.
Early last month it was announced that frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy was signing up for the film. The two previously worked together on “Inception” and the “Dark Knight” trilogy.
TheWrap, who first reported the news, says that Murphy will play a supporting role alongside previously announced stars Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy. Newcomers Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard and One Direction crooner Harry Styles also star.
Nolan wrote the screenplay for the film, which tells the story of the Dunkirk evacuation during Operation Dynamo at the beginning of World War II. The operation would ultimately save around 330,000 Allied soldiers from the surrounding German forces. In addition to directing and writing, Nolan is also producing with Emma Thomas.
Frequent collaborator Hans Zimmer is on board for the score, and Hoyte van Hoytema is on board for cinematography. Van Hoytema, who previously worked with Nolan on “Interstellar,” has certainly been busy as of late. In recent years, Hoytema has worked on films such as “Spectre,” “Let the Right One In,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “The Fighter,” and “Her.” The news about van Hoytema was first reported by The Film Stage.
“Dunkirk” will be the first directorial effort since 2014 by Nolan, who’s known for undertaking massive film projects with big ideas. The film is being shot with a mixture of IMAX® and 65mm film.
“Dunkirk” is slated for a July 21st, 2017 release.
