Rumors of an all-female take on “Ocean’s 11” have plagued the industry for quite some time, but verifiable information has been relatively scant. That is, until now.
Helena Bonham Carter, who has been rumored to have a part in the film, has spoken up about it in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a really good script — but I still don’t know if I’m going to be in it,” the actress told the outlet. “But it’s a great script, and it’s great for women. Just hilarious.”
The film at first was going by the moniker “Ocean’s 8,” but has since changed to “Ocean’s Ocho” on IMDB. Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games”) is said to be directing the film, which will feature a script by newcomer Olivia Milch. Reports claim that the story will center on a Met Gala heist, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Several names – including Bonham Carter’s – have been thrown around for a cast. Sandra Bullock, Elizabeth Banks, Cate Blanchett and Mindy Kaling have all been mentioned for roles. Jennifer Lawrence was also offered a role, but had to turn it down. For her part, Bonham Carter said, “I have no idea if I’m in it. I better go and find out. … I’ve got to contact them because I’ve finally emerged from doing a big job [“55 Steps” with Hillary Swank].”
The actress says she supports the film regardless of if she is indeed in it or not, however. “When everyone says, ‘Well, most characters in commercial films can just as easily be played by a woman,’ well, I can tell you, it’s true,” she says. “That’s what they’ve just done with this.”
