dir. Ava DuVernay – NYFF – (Netflix)

It’s unusal for Oscar prognosticators to keep such a close eye on a documentary feature, but with the surprise announcement that Ava DuVernay’s follow-up to “Selma” would open the New York Film Festival, our interests have been piqued.  Filmed in secrecy, the film is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which outlawed slavery.  DuVernay’s passion will surely pour out of the screen and this could be a contender to take the Documentary Feature prize this year.  If it’s something extra special, especially in a fiery election year, this could become the first documentary to score a Best Picture nomination.
