Kristen Stewart shocked many last year with surprise wins for her turn in “Clouds of Sils Maria” on the precursor circuit. Also a film from Olivier Assayas, “Sils Maria” didn’t have the financial backing to mount a credible campaign. With that said, IFC Films is behind Assayas again but the word is a bit more mixed this time around. The initial screening at the Cannes Film Festival reported boos from the critics, but at its official premiere a reported four and a half-minute standing ovation followed. Consequently, Assayas shared the Best Director prize at the festival with Cristian Mungiu of “Graduation.” Playing at NYFF may prove to be a different animal altogether, but here’s to hoping for a warmer, more consistent reception on the circuit.
