Writer/director Damien Chazelle‘s upcoming musical ode to old Hollywood, “La La Land,” will be opening the 73rd Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31, where it will also be in competition. The festival poster for the film was released today, just in time for the film’s premiere tomorrow.
The film stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone (who previously played a couple in “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”) as a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress, respectively, who fall in love in Los Angeles. As the two face more and more success, their relationship is put to the test.
“La La Land” is Chazelle’s first film since his indie darling (and Oscar dark horse) “Whiplash.” J.K. Simmons, who won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Whiplash,” teamed up with Chazelle on “La La Land” as well.
Stone was last seen onscreen in “Aloha” last year. She has several projects in the works, including “Battle of the Sexes,” which follows the famous tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King (Stone). Stone will reunite with “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” co-star Steve Carell for that project.
She will also lend her voice to the animated film “The Croods 2,” and will also appear in the royal political drama “The Favourite” alongside Rachel Weisz.
Gosling also has several projects in the works, including Terrence Malick’s “Weightless.” That film also stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara and Benicio Del Toro. He has also been cast in the “Untitled Blade Runner Project.”
“La La Land” was originally slated for a July release date, but it later got changed to an awards season release of Dec. 2 (limited), and Dec. 16 (wide).
