“Trainwreck” star Bill Hader is joining the cast of “Power Rangers,” according to the film’s Twitter. Hader will play Alpha 5, a robot who works with Zordon. Alpha 5 has a friendly relationship with the Power Rangers throughout the show.
Back in June acclaimed actor Bryan Cranston announced he was also heading to the film.
In the film, Cranston is portraying Zordon, the creator and mentor of the Power Rangers. Speaking to the Huffington Post about the project, he said:
I wasn’t really high on it until I talked to the producer, read the script and talked to the director. After that I went, ‘This is different.’ This is as different a reimagining as the ‘Batman’ television series as it became the [‘The Dark Knight‘] movie series. You can’t compare those two, and nor can you compare this movie version of the ‘Power Rangers’ to that television series. It’s unrecognizable for the most part. There are tenets of the folklore that you hold onto for sure, but the inspiration is different, and the sensibility of it, and the approach to the filmmaking is completely different.
Cranston and Hader join previously announced star Elizabeth Banks, who will play the main villain in the film, Rita Repulsa.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Banks said, “I’ve never played a villain before,” adding that she’s excited for her “world domination – and being unpredictable as a character.”
The film is based on the classic ‘90s TV show “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” It centers around five super teenagers known as the Blue, Black, Yellow, Pink and Red Power Rangers who fight different villains in order to protect humanity.
“Power Rangers” also stars Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Becky G. as the Yellow Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, and Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger. The film is directed by Dean Israelite (“Project Almanac,” “Acholiland”). It will release in theaters next year on March 24.
The first footage from the film will debut at New York Comic Con next month.
