The central mystery in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the question of Rey’s parentage. According to Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the film, we may not have to wait much longer to get answers.

In an interview with Vulture, Ridley was asked if her character could be related to Obi-Wan Kenobi. “We will see in a year,” she said, referencing “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which will be in theaters next December. “Just sit tight on that question.”

In the same interview, Ridley addressed rumors that Rey’s mother could be Jyn Erso from the upcoming “Rogue One.” To that end, she said, “I mean, I think historically it wouldn’t work, because she is … Darth Vader is there … so she would ultimately be my great-grandma; no, she would be my grandma. I mean it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away.”

Rey took her first steps into a larger world in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, “Star Wars: Episode VIII,”  15, 2016.

“Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis. New cast members will also include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.
“Star Wars: Episode VIII” is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman. In addition, it is executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin and Tom Karnowski.
The film will release in theaters Dec. 15, 2017. “Rogue One” debuts Dec. 16 of this year.
