10. “The Princess and the Frog” (2009)
Best Musical Number: “Almost There”
Of Disney’s modern musicals, “The Princess and the Frog” remains one of Disney’s most underrated. The film finds a hardworking waitress, Tiana (Anika Noni-Rose) turned into a frog upon kissing the cursed, lazy Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos). The crux of what makes the film so special is within the gifts our protagonist Tiana embodies. The film is a fable of how hard work is the cornerstone to success. Never is this more apparent than in the early song “Almost There.” The song finds Tiana working towards her goal of starting her own restaurant. Sure, the villain is one of the more forgettable in the Disney canon. However, this is less a movie about conflict, and more of a warm yarn set against a New Orleans backdrop.
