Academy Idol X: Top 13 Voting Opens!

Hello readers! Academy Idol X is underway and we’re here to announce the Top 13 films. To start with, we’re going to announce the advancing films from the round of 30. There were some tight races, but the films that came out on top are far from a surprise. Without further ado, let’s get into our advancing films.

Hidden Figures

Advancing from Group 1

Silence” (Adapted)

Hidden Figures” (Adapted)

La La Land” (Original)

and “Jackie” (Original)

Advancing from Group 2

Fences” (Adapted)

Nocturnal Animals” (Adapted)

Manchester By the Sea” (Original)

and “Loving” (Original)

Advancing from Group 3:

Arrival” (Adapted)

The Jungle Book” (Adapted)

Moonlight” (Original)

and “Hell or High Water” (Original).

And our staff’s pick to continue in the competition is…

Zootopia!”

Just as a note for the readers screaming foul with “Moonlight” and “Loving.” When the voting opened for the top 30, both were still considered original screenplays. Both would have still made the cut in their respective groups, even if they were to move over. To keep consistent, we left them in their respective categories. Moving forward, there is no elimination based on whether films are adapted or original, so the designation frankly does not matter moving forward. Both are among the best of the year, and we’re excited they each advanced.

Sorry to the films eliminated from the competition. It’ll be interesting to see where the love for the eliminated films moves to in the next few weeks.

With all this in mind, we’re ready to start voting on the top 13! This week’s category is “EARLY PRECURSORS.” When voting for the films, think about which films have continued to show up at critic awards, SAG and the Golden Globe nomination phase.

Vote for your favorites, and lobby for who should advance in the comments below!

Voting for Top 13 closes Dec. 24. Results will be announced Dec. 26.
