BEST PERFORMANCE: “Aliens” (1986)
The actress who brought us Ellen Ripley, one of the strongest female characters in film history, has never won an Oscar. Despite being thrice nominated (twice in the same year, for “Gorillas in the Mist” and “Working Girl”), Weaver has yet to take home the prize. She keeps herself busy on large and small projects, voiceover work and television. And she will be busy over the next several years with planned “Avatar” sequels and a reprisal of her Ripley character in a collaboration with Neil Blomkamp. These might not be the films that lead her to Oscar gold, but it’s likely something will soon.
