Terrence Malick‘s latest project, formerly known as “Weightless,” has been given the official treatment, as it were. Broad Green Pictures today announced the film’s new name, release date and the first look at the film.
Per IndieWire, who first broke the news, the film’s new title is “Song to Song.” The synopsis is the following:
“In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
On top of its stacked cast, the film boasts appearances from musicians as well, including Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, Florence and the Machine and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The film’s release date is March 17. It is rumored to have a potential premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin this year. That is not confirmed yet, however.
“Song to Song” was filmed in Malick’s (and this writer’s) hometown of Austin, Texas. The film boasts one of the most impressive casts in recent memory. Between Mara, Gosling, Fassbender and Portman there are seven Oscar nominations, including one win for Portman.
Stay tuned for the latest updates on “Song to Song.”
